　　1.stand-out 才华出众的人

　　在这儿stand是动词，意思为“忍受”。Stand the heat来自这样一句俗语： If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen. 这句话如果直译就是：要是你受不了热，就别待在厨房里。谁都知道大热天在火辣辣的炉子旁操作的厨师是多么能吃苦耐劳，所以这句话的含意就是，如果你吃不起苦就别干那一行。例如：

　　Look, I'm not going to argue with you any more - no, you can't use the car tonight! That's my decision and I'm standing pat on it。

Stand pat这句话起源于十九世纪晚期。玩扑克的时候如果轮到你补牌但是你有一手pat，也就是手上的牌很好，你拿定主意不补牌，你就说，stand pat。慢慢地，stand pat被用来表示坚定不移、决不改变主意。例如：

今年秋天她将上哈佛大学学化学工程。她真是个杰出人才。

　　4. stand pat 打定主意，决不动摇

　　总统老是抱怨报界对他的态度，可不是他自己要当总统的吗？我的意思是，他要是受不了批评指责，就别坐总统这个位子。

　　这儿在stand和out之间有一个连词符号。 Stand-out当名词用，它和形容词outstanding意义相关连。不少人知道outstanding是“杰出的”。那么stand-out就必然是鹤立鸡群的人或者物了。例如：

　　The president is always complaining about the way the press treats him. He asked for the job, though, didn't he? What I say is, if he can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen。
